Penrith Nepean Game Report

Bosnich Parry’s PNU
Report by Stephen Wilkinson

After a successful midweek victory winning 5-4 on penalties against the Rockdale City Suns and progressing to the next round of the Tiger Turf Cup against Wollongong. Penrith Nepean United had their work cut out for them playing round 16 in the Telechoice Premier League against Sydney Olympic, one of Australia’s most respected football clubs, with one of Australia’s most successful players in goals. The former Socceroo, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich still had a majestic presence on a soggy Belmore Oval in front of 600 fans.

A solid start saw the Penrith team match it with Olympic, until a bold tackle on the edge of the Nepean box in the 9th minute resulted in a free kick, Olympics Iain Ramsey hitting the crossbar from the stylish free kick.

A 14th minute break by PNU striker Greg Kondek was denied by the former socceroo who was composed and blocked Kondek’s effort. Kondek and fellow PNU workhorse Ben Gough continually harassing the Olympic defence.

Dimitrios Petratos launching a troublesome corner kick in the 20th minute forced Bosnich to punch it away, landing favorably and putting Penrith under pressure with the counter, a quality shot from the break saw Penrith’s keeper Mathew Nash parry the driving shot into the path of Olympic striker Matthew Mayora who scored Olympic taking a 1-0 lead.

Gough and Kondek continued to look for opportunities with a Gough strike denied in the 26th minute, Kondek drove through the Olympic defence in the 36th minute forcing Bosnich off his line and the ball going wide just missing the post, the referee not hearing the cries for a penalty from the small loyal following of Penrith supporters. The persistent Kondek and Gough rewarded a short time later when Kondek one on one with Bosnich composed, lays off to Gough who drives home the equalizer, both teams locked at 1-1 at half time.

Matthew Mayora scored Olympics second goal in the 51st minute, punishing the United defence for not clearing the ball sufficiently in the danger zone. In the 63rd minute PNU’s Ben Gough is ruled off side after cheekily putting the ball through Bosnich’s legs denying Gough the equalizer.

Gough’s troublesome runs were rewarded in the 69th minute after he was brought down on the edge of the box, the free kick taken by Dimitrios Petratos finding Kondek at the far post who tapped the equalizer past Bosnich.

Penrith looking for the win continually troubled Olympic and in the 81st minute a superb strike 30 metres out from PNU’s Paul Crisp forced Bosnich to parry the shot over the bar with equal quality.

The fourth official signaling 3 minutes of injury time in the 90th minute saw both sides fighting for an opportunity. A break a short time later saw a ball over the sideline and justifiable cries for a throw in by the Penrith Nepean bench, the play was then switched and the ensuing cross was headed in by Olympic substitute Tolgay Ozbey, Olympic snatching a last gasp victory 3-2 in the 94th minute.
